The Social Remix: LeBron James Lets His Opinion Be Known About Charlottesville

For many athletes out there, one could say that standing up for what you believe in within the public eye is like the death penalty. Just ask Colin Kaepernick. It’s almost as if league officials in each sport don’t believe social issues belong in sports, as if the majority of both the NFL and NBA are populated by African American athletes respectively.

Charlottesville is another prime example for athletes to step up and use their platforms to put their foot down on situations of racism. Now I’m not saying LeBron James was the only person to voice an opinion, but he has the largest and most impactful voice in sports right now. It was amazing to see him speak out on the violence that has been occurring in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Many people may think that topics should stay completely separate. Teachers should teach, Police should protect and serve, and LeBron James should dribble a basketball and just keep his mouth shut. But as a young African American male, I can tell you we were never built that way. With Nike money on the line, plenty of endorsements and commercials in the bag, he said what he believed in anyway.

Thank you, LeBron! You’re my hero.
